Ingredients

  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. white vinegar
  • 1/2 c. light corn syrup
  • 1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp. butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Butter a large baking sheet.
  2. In a black iron pot (about 2 quart size), combine the sugar, vinegar, corn syrup, cream of tartar, and butter.
  3. Bring to a boil and cook until it reaches 250 degrees on a candy thermometer.
  4. Remove from heat and quickly stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Immediately pour into the baking pan. Allow to cool slightly until the edges become firm enough to pull toward the center of the pan.
  6. Continue pulling edges toward the center until the mixture is firm enough to handle.
  7. Be careful when handling the mixture, as it will be very hot. Avoid buttering your hands, as this makes it difficult to pull the taffy.
  8. The taffy should not stick to your hands when ready to be pulled. If it does, rub a little cornstarch onto the palms of your hands.
