Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • enough flour to make a soft dough, but stiff enough to roll out and cut with doughnut cutter
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 2 tsp. baking powder

Instructions

  1. Mix eggs, shortening, sugar, salt, nutmeg, buttermilk, baking powder, and soda together in a large bowl.
  2. Gradually add enough flour to make a soft, yet stiff dough suitable for rolling out.
  3. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  4. Cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or a round cutter with a hole in the center.
  5. Heat deep oil to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Fry the doughnuts in hot oil until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove doughnuts and drain on paper towels before serving.
