Ingredients

  • 5 cups diced turnips or rutabagas
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Combine turnips, salt, and sugar in a saucepan.
  2. Add water to cover, bring to a boil, then simmer 12 to 15 minutes.
  3. Drain the turnips and set aside.
  4. Melt butter in the saucepan.
  5. Add flour and milk, cook until thickened and bubbly.
  6. Add seasoned salt, pepper, and shredded Cheddar cheese, cook until cheese melts.
  7. Fold in drained turnips.
  8. Pour the mixture into a slightly greased 1 1/2 quart casserole dish.
  9. Sprinkle bread crumbs on top.
  10. Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
