Victorian Eggnog

- Bring the whipping cream and half and half to a simmer in a large saucepan.
- Whisk egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl to blend.
- Gradually whisk the hot cream mixture into the yolk mixture.
- Return the mixture to the same saucepan.
- Stir over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens and leaves a path on the back of a spoon when finger is drawn across, about 4 minutes. Do not boil.
- Strain the mixture into a bowl.
- Stir in ground nutmeg and cool slightly.
- Divide the warm or cold mixture among 6 cups or glasses.
- Stir 1 tablespoon of sherry into each serving.
- Sprinkle additional nutmeg over each and serve.
