Viennese Walnut Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 stick margarine, softened
  • 1/4 c. sugar
  • 1 (3 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
  • 1 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 c. chopped walnuts
  • 6 oz. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 stick margarine, softened
  • 1 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. instant coffee, dissolved in 1 tsp. water
  • 1 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Cream together 1 stick margarine, white sugar and cream cheese.
  2. Blend in 1 1/4 cups flour.
  3. Pat into 9 x 13-inch pan. Combine 1 cup walnuts and chocolate chips.
  4. Sprinkle over pastry. Cream together 1/2 stick margarine, brown sugar, eggs and coffee. Sift together 1 cup flour, baking powder and salt.
  5. Blend flour mixture into brown sugar mixture.
  6. Spread over chocolate chips and nuts.
  7. Sprinkle on remaining 1/2 cup walnuts.
  8. Bake at 350° about 30 minutes, until firm on top.
