Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup soft shortening (Crisco)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup walnuts

Instructions

  1. Sift flour, sugar, and salt into a large bowl.
  2. Mix in thoroughly with a fork: shortening, egg yolk, milk, and vanilla.
  3. Form the mixture into small balls, about the size of a walnut.
  4. Place the balls on a cookie sheet.
  5. Press each ball to about 1/16 inch thickness with the bottom of a greased glass dipped in sugar.
  6. Brush the tops with slightly beaten egg white.
  7. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 6 to 8 minutes or until slightly brown.
