Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup minced onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 2-quart round casserole dish.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Stir in chopped walnuts.
  4. With a fork, blend in buttermilk, melted butter, and minced onions until the mixture is moist.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  6. Knead for 2 to 3 minutes, until the dough forms a ball, adding more flour if necessary.
  7. Place the dough in the prepared casserole dish and score the top with an 'X'.
  8. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.
