Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 1/4 to 6 3/4 cups flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup margarine or butter melted
  • 1 tablespoon shortening melted
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
  • 4 cups ground walnuts
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir to dissolve the yeast and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 6 1/4 to 6 3/4 cups of flour, 2/3 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
  3. Add melted margarine or butter, melted shortening, beaten eggs, and evaporated milk to the dry ingredients.
  4. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
  6. Meanwhile, prepare the walnut filling by mixing ground walnuts, 2/3 cup brown sugar, and 1/3 cup sugar.
  7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions.
  8. Roll each portion into a rectangle, spread with the walnut filling, then roll up tightly.
  9. Place the rolls seam-side down on greased baking sheets.
  10. Let the rolls rise again until nearly doubled, about 30-45 minutes.
  11. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Remove from oven, cool slightly, and serve warm or at room temperature.
