Ingredients

  • 2 c. dried pea beans
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 c. diced carrots
  • 2 green peppers
  • 3 c. canned tomatoes
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 c. diced potatoes
  • 1 qt. milk

Instructions

  1. Soak the dried pea beans until they swell, about a couple of hours.
  2. Drain the beans and put them in a kettle with 3 quarts of fresh water.
  3. Add the finely chopped onions and bring to a boil.
  4. Adjust the heat and simmer until the beans are just tender, about 30 to 45 minutes.
  5. Add the diced carrots, green peppers, canned tomatoes, salt, and black pepper, then cook until the vegetables are tender, about 25 minutes.
  6. Add the milk last and heat through.
  7. Serve the chowder as soon as it is hot.
