Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Combine salt and boiling water in a saucepan.
  2. Add shortening and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat to medium and add flour all at once, stirring vigorously until a ball forms.
  4. Cool slightly.
  5. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition until smooth.
  6. Mix in cooked ground beef and thyme until thoroughly combined.
  7. Heat oil to 365°F (about 185°C).
  8. Drop teaspoonfuls of batter into the hot oil.
  9. Fry until golden brown and puffed up.
  10. Drain on paper towels and serve.
