Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 lb. German sweet chocolate baking bars
  • 3 Tbsp. water
  • 3 Tbsp. light cream
  • 4 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 4 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. shortening
  • 3/4 c. butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 c. sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 1/2 c. milk
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla

Instructions

  1. Grease and flour the bottom of a tube cake pan.
  2. Melt the German sweet chocolate baking bars with 3 tablespoons of water until smooth, then remove from heat.
  3. Blend in 3 tablespoons of light cream.
  4. Sift together 4 1/2 cups of sifted flour, 4 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt.
  5. In a large bowl, cream together 3/4 cup of softened butter and 3/4 cup of shortening until blended.
  6. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups of sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
  7. Add 6 eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  8. Combine 1 1/2 cups of milk and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract.
  9. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk mixture to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  10. Pour 1/4 of the batter into the prepared pan.
  11. Drizzle 1/2 of the melted chocolate mixture over the batter.
  12. Repeat with remaining batter and chocolate mixture, ending with batter on top.
  13. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or up to 80 minutes, checking at 45 minutes for doneness.
