- Grease and flour the bottom of a tube cake pan.
- Melt the German sweet chocolate baking bars with 3 tablespoons of water until smooth, then remove from heat.
- Blend in 3 tablespoons of light cream.
- Sift together 4 1/2 cups of sifted flour, 4 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together 3/4 cup of softened butter and 3/4 cup of shortening until blended.
- Gradually add 2 1/2 cups of sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
- Add 6 eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Combine 1 1/2 cups of milk and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract.
- Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk mixture to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
- Pour 1/4 of the batter into the prepared pan.
- Drizzle 1/2 of the melted chocolate mixture over the batter.
- Repeat with remaining batter and chocolate mixture, ending with batter on top.
- Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or up to 80 minutes, checking at 45 minutes for doneness.
