Ingredients

  • 3 apples (1 1/2 cups), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Mix together peeled, cored, and sliced apples with 1/4 cup sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. In a bowl, combine 1 3/4 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Cut in 1/2 cup butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk egg and milk together.
  6. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  7. Pour batter into greased baking dish.
  8. Spread the seasoned apple mixture evenly over the batter.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
  10. Serve warm, optionally with ice cream or whipped cream.
