Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup hot unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup mixed fruits

Instructions

  1. Add shortening, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg to a mixing bowl.
  2. Add applesauce, boiling water, and baking soda; mix well.
  3. Sift flour and sugar together, then gradually add to the warm mixture, stirring continuously.
  4. Fold in raisins, chopped nuts, and mixed fruits.
  5. Pour the batter into a prepared baking pan and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
