Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. beans
  • 1/4 c. dark molasses
  • 1/2 tsp. powdered mustard
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 clove
  • 1/2 bay leaf
  • 2 oz. catsup
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp. salt

Instructions

  1. Soak the beans overnight in water.
  2. Drain the beans and place them in a bean pot.
  3. Add dark molasses, powdered mustard, a small onion with a clove stuck in it, half a bay leaf, catsup, Worcestershire sauce, and salt to the bean pot.
  4. Add water until the pot is three-quarters full.
  5. Set the bean pot in a deep pan filled with water and bake at 350°F (175°C).
  6. During baking, keep adding water as needed to prevent the beans from boiling dry.
  7. Bake for 5 hours, until the beans are tender and flavors meld.
