Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lard
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar and lard; add beaten eggs.
  2. Sift together flour, salt, baking powder, soda, and nutmeg.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the sugar and lard mixture with buttermilk, mixing well.
  4. Add more flour if necessary until the dough can be handled easily.
  5. Shape the dough into doughnuts and fry until golden brown.
  6. Turn the doughnuts as soon as they come up from the oil so they won't crack.
