  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/4 c. dry red wine
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  13. Simmer the sauce uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  14. Serve the fried mozzarella slices topped with hot marinara sauce.

Tips & Substitutions

For a crispier coating, let the breaded mozzarella sit for a few minutes before frying. You can substitute panko breadcrumbs for a crunchier texture. If you prefer a milder sauce, consider using crushed tomatoes instead of whole tomatoes. For a twist, add red pepper flakes for heat, or try serving the fried cheese with Pizza Sauce To Can for a different flavor profile.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the mozzarella marinara with a side of crusty bread for dipping or alongside a simple salad for a complete meal. It pairs beautifully with Classic Fettuccine Alfredo or can be enjoyed as an appetizer. Consider garnishing with additional fresh parsley or grated Parmesan for added flavor and presentation.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover mozzarella marinara in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place it in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through. Alternatively, you can microwave individual portions for about 1-2 minutes. Avoid reheating more than once to preserve texture and flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of cheese instead of mozzarella?

Yes, while mozzarella is traditional for this recipe, you can experiment with other cheeses like provolone or even a blend of Italian cheeses. Just keep in mind that the melting properties and flavor will vary, which may change the final dish's texture and taste.

Is it possible to make this dish ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the marinara sauce in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Fry the mozzarella just before serving for the best texture. This allows you to enjoy the dish freshly made without compromising the quality of the cheese.

What can I serve with mozzarella marinara?

This dish pairs well with a variety of sides such as a fresh green salad, garlic bread, or even pasta like Gnocchi (Potato Dumpling). For a heartier meal, consider serving it alongside Stuffed Manicotti Shells to create a comforting Italian dinner.
