- Boil the raisins in 1 1/2 cups water for 20 minutes.
- Drain the raisins and reserve 3/4 cup of the liquid, then let it cool.
- Cream together the sugar and butter.
- Add the egg and continue beating.
- Alternately add the flour, spices, and reserved liquid to the mixture until well blended.
- Fold in the chopped walnuts and soaked raisins.
- Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch square or 7 x 11-inch pan.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Frost with plain butter frosting before serving.
