Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 eggs
  • 5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • almonds
  • 1 egg (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Scald the milk and stir in sugar, margarine, and salt. Cool to lukewarm.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water.
  3. Stir in the lukewarm milk mixture, beaten eggs, and half the flour. Beat until smooth.
  4. Stir in the remaining flour to make a stiff but sticky dough.
  5. Cover the dough and let it rise until doubled in size.
  6. Divide the dough into three equal parts and braid them together.
  7. Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet.
  8. Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle with almonds.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, and serve.
