Ingredients

  • 8 slices day-old bread, broken in pieces
  • 1 quart milk, heated
  • 1 cup light cream
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/2 cup seedless raisins

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine bread pieces, heated milk, and cream.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat eggs slightly.
  4. Stir in sugar.
  5. Add the bread mixture to the egg and sugar mixture.
  6. Stir in vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, melted butter, and raisins.
  7. Pour the mixture into a buttered, shallow 2-quart baking dish.
  8. Set the baking dish in a larger shallow pan.
  9. Pour hot water into the larger pan to a depth of 1 inch.
  10. Bake for 1 hour, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Serve warm with brandy sauce.
