Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon warm water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream together margarine, shortening, and sugar.
  2. Beat in eggs, one at a time.
  3. Sift together flour and salt.
  4. Stir cocoa into warm water.
  5. Allow to cool and pour in soda.
  6. Add sifted flour and salt alternately with cocoa mixture and buttermilk to the creamed mixture.
  7. Add vanilla.
  8. Pour batter into three greased and floured 9-inch layer cake pans.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15 to 20 minutes.
  10. Cool and frost.
