Brunch Spinach Strata
A savory brunch dish featuring layers of bread, spinach, and cheese baked to perfection, ideal for a hearty, flavorful start to the day or weekend gathering.
Ingredients
- 8 slices firm white bread ⓘ
- 4 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese ⓘ
- 1 (10 oz.) package chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry ⓘ
- 1 tablespoon margarine or butter, softened ⓘ
- 2 cups milk ⓘ
- 6 large eggs ⓘ
- 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, chopped ⓘ
- 1/2 teaspoon salt ⓘ
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper ⓘ
Instructions
- Grease an 8 x 8 inch glass baking dish.
- Place 4 slices of bread in the dish.
- Top with 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, all chopped spinach, then remaining cheese.
- Spread margarine or butter on one side of the remaining bread slices.
- Place the buttered bread slices in the dish, buttered side up.
- In a medium bowl, beat eggs, milk, chopped basil, salt, and black pepper until blended.
- Slowly pour the egg mixture over the bread slices in the dish.
- Prick the bread with a fork and press slices down to absorb the egg mixture.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Uncover the baking dish and bake for 1 hour or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove from oven and let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
