- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two 8-inch round pans with waxed paper.
- Cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with melted butterscotch chips and 1/2 cup water, mixing well after each addition.
- Stir in grated carrots, raisins, and applesauce until evenly combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool before removing from pans and frosting as desired.
