Ingredients

  • 2 cups dark brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons Crisco
  • 2 sticks butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon all spice
  • a dash of salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 box seedless raisins
  • 4 cups self rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, Crisco, butter, all spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and raisins in a saucepan and boil for 5 minutes.
  2. Let the mixture cool completely.
  3. Add 4 cups of sifted self-rising flour to the cooled mixture.
  4. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 2 tablespoons of warm water and add to the batter.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased baking pan.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30-45 minutes.
