Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or oleo
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 whole eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 pound chopped dates
  • 1 pound chopped candied orange slices
  • 2 cups chopped pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Add all flour to chopped dates, orange slices, nuts, and coconut. Let stand in a large bowl.
  2. Cream shortening; add sugar and eggs, one at a time.
  3. Stir soda into buttermilk, then add to the sugar, egg, and shortening mixture.
  4. Add this mixture to the nuts, date, candied orange slices, and flour mixture.
  5. Stir with a spoon until well mixed.
  6. Pack into a greased 10-inch or larger tube pan lined with wax paper.
  7. Bake at 250°F (120°C) for 2 1/2 to 3 hours.
  8. Remove from oven while still hot, and while it is still hot, add glaze made of one cup orange juice stirred into two cups powdered sugar.
  9. Let stand in the pan overnight.
