Ingredients

  • 8 slices bread
  • 8 oz sharp cheese
  • 1/4 cup melted margarine
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 2 cups milk
  • diced ham (optional)
  • sausage (optional)
  • diced green peppers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Trim crusts from bread at least four hours before serving or the day before.
  2. Grease a shallow casserole dish.
  3. Layer bread slices, then cut cheese into bite-sized pieces, and layer again with bread and cheese.
  4. Pour melted margarine over the layered bread and cheese.
  5. Beat eggs well in a separate bowl.
  6. Add salt, pepper, dry mustard, and milk to the beaten eggs and mix thoroughly.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the layered bread and cheese in the casserole.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least four hours or overnight.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Bake covered for 30 minutes.
  11. Remove cover and bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes until golden.
