Chinese Savory Beef offers tender, flavorful beef cooked in a savory soy-based sauce with ginger and scallions, perfect for hearty meals over rice or noodles.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 2 lbs. lean beef, cut in 1 1/2 inch squares
  • 3 scallions, chopped or 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 thin slices ginger
  • 1 1/2 cups soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 3 cups water

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a heavy skillet or Dutch oven.
  2. Add the lean beef and quick-fry until brown.
  3. Add chopped scallions or onion, crushed garlic, and ginger; quick-fry for a few minutes.
  4. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, pepper, and water.
  5. Bring to a boil.
  6. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 3 hours.
  7. Add more liquid if needed during simmering.
  8. Just before serving, thicken with a small amount of flour, if desired.
  9. Serve over rice or noodles.
