Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup pecans or walnuts
  • 1 (8 oz.) package semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a Bundt pan.
  2. Sprinkle baking soda over chopped dates in a medium bowl, add hot water, and set aside.
  3. Cream together shortening, butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Sift together flour, salt, and cocoa powder, then gradually add to the creamed mixture and mix well.
  5. Add the date mixture to the batter and combine thoroughly.
  6. Fold in chopped pecans or walnuts and semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared Bundt pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool before slicing and serving.
