Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 well beaten egg
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Add boiling water to shortening, sugar, and cocoa; beat until sugar dissolves.
  2. Sift dry ingredients including flour, salt, baking powder, and soda.
  3. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with the beaten egg, sour cream, and vanilla to the wet mixture.
  4. Fill greased cupcake pans half full with batter.
  5. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes.
  6. Top with marshmallow halves before baking or frost with seven-minute frosting after baking.
