Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Sift sugar, flour, and salt together.
  2. In a saucepan, bring Crisco shortening, butter, water, and cocoa to a boil.
  3. Pour the hot mixture over the sifted dry ingredients.
  4. Add buttermilk, beaten eggs, baking soda, and vanilla; mix gently without overbeating.
  5. Pour batter into a well-greased cookie sheet with sides, or into two 8x8-inch cake pans, or a 9x13-inch casserole pan.
  6. Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes.
  7. While the cake is baking, prepare the icing.
