Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp. mustard seeds
  • 1/2 cup cooking oil
  • 4-6 curry leaves
  • 3 green chilies
  • 1 medium onion, finely grated
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. turmeric
  • 1-1/4 tsp. garlic paste
  • 1-1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. cumin powder
  • 1 tsp. coriander powder
  • 1/2 tomato, thinly sliced
  • 5 Tbsp. tamarind paste

Instructions

  1. Clean, wash, and dry the catfish; sprinkle with salt and set aside.
  2. Heat cooking oil in a pan over medium heat.
  3. Add mustard seeds and curry leaves; sauté until they crackle.
  4. Stir in green chilies and grated onion; cook until onion becomes translucent.
  5. Add salt, turmeric, garlic paste, cayenne pepper, cumin powder, and coriander powder; cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.
  6. Add sliced tomato and cook until it softens.
  7. Stir in tamarind paste and cook for another 5 minutes to blend flavors.
  8. Gently add the prepared catfish to the curry, coating with the masala.
  9. Cover and simmer on low heat for 15-20 minutes until fish is cooked through.
  10. Serve hot with rice or bread.
