Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups applesauce
  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 teaspoons soda
  • 1 cup raisins or dates
  • 1 pint mixed fruit
  • 1 pint cherries (red and green)
  • 1 package walnuts

Instructions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar together until well blended.
  2. Add beaten eggs to the creamed mixture.
  3. Dissolve soda in applesauce.
  4. Sift dry ingredients (flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, salt) and add alternately with applesauce to the creamed mixture.
  5. Fold in raisins or dates, mixed fruit, cherries, and chopped walnuts.
