Ingredients

  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/4 cup citron
  • 1/4 cup candied cherries
  • 1/4 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water; add sugar, salt, eggs, butter, and half of the flour.
  2. Beat for 10 minutes at medium speed on mixer or by hand.
  3. Blend in the rest of the flour, chopped almonds, citron, candied cherries, and raisins.
  4. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Stir down batter by beating 25 strokes.
  6. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight.
  7. On a well-floured board, divide dough in half and press each into a 10 x 7-inch oval sheet.
  8. Spread each with 2 tablespoons of soft butter or margarine.
  9. Fold each in two lengthwise, pressing edges in place, onto a greased baking sheet.
  10. Brush the top with slightly beaten egg whites mixed with 1 tablespoon water.
  11. Let rise in a warm place until light.
  12. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes or until done.
  13. Allow to cool, then frost and decorate with almonds and cherries.
