Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soda
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 3 cups flour

Instructions

  1. Cream butter or margarine with vanilla.
  2. Gradually add the sugar.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until light and fluffy.
  4. Add cocoa, soda, and salt; mix well.
  5. Turn mixer on low speed.
  6. Add buttermilk slowly while mixing.
  7. Add flour gradually and mix until just combined.
  8. Pour batter into prepared pans or layer as desired.
  9. Bake at 350°F for 25 to 30 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean.
  10. Ice with your favorite frosting before serving.
