- In a mixing bowl, beat together brown sugar and butter.
- Beat in the egg, instant coffee, and vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, stir together all-purpose flour, salt, and baking soda.
- Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
- Stir in chopped pecans or walnuts and chocolate chips.
- Spread the batter evenly in a greased 9 x 9-inch baking pan.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes.
- Allow to cool, then sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
- Cut into squares and serve.
