Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 6 ounces chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat together brown sugar and butter.
  2. Beat in the egg, instant coffee, and vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, stir together all-purpose flour, salt, and baking soda.
  4. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
  5. Stir in chopped pecans or walnuts and chocolate chips.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in a greased 9 x 9-inch baking pan.
  7. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes.
  8. Allow to cool, then sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
  9. Cut into squares and serve.
