- Soften yeast in warm water.
- Heat cream to lukewarm and combine with sugar, shortening, salt, and baking soda.
- Add 1 cup of sifted flour and beat well.
- Add yeast mixture and the beaten egg, then beat until smooth.
- Stir in the remaining flour to form a soft dough.
- Turn out onto a floured board and knead until smooth.
- Roll into a 24 x 6-inch rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Fold over half of the lengthwise dough.
- Combine brown sugar and cinnamon, then spread the softened butter over the dough.
- Sprinkle the sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly over the buttered half.
- Cut the dough into 1-inch strips.
- Twist each strip in opposite directions to form a curl.
- Place the twisted strips on a greased baking pan and set in a warm place to rise.
- Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
- While warm, ice with powdered sugar icing before serving.
