Ingredients

  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup light cream
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 cups sifted flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons soft butter
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Heat cream to lukewarm and combine with sugar, shortening, salt, and baking soda.
  3. Add 1 cup of sifted flour and beat well.
  4. Add yeast mixture and the beaten egg, then beat until smooth.
  5. Stir in the remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  6. Turn out onto a floured board and knead until smooth.
  7. Roll into a 24 x 6-inch rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick.
  8. Fold over half of the lengthwise dough.
  9. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon, then spread the softened butter over the dough.
  10. Sprinkle the sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly over the buttered half.
  11. Cut the dough into 1-inch strips.
  12. Twist each strip in opposite directions to form a curl.
  13. Place the twisted strips on a greased baking pan and set in a warm place to rise.
  14. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  15. While warm, ice with powdered sugar icing before serving.
