Ingredients

  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp celery seed
  • 2 Tbsp flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 c vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • pepper to taste
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/4 c milk
  • 2 Tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Mix dry mustard, celery seed, flour, salt, and pepper in the top of a double boiler.
  2. Beat egg with milk and slowly add to the dry ingredients, blending thoroughly.
  3. Cook over hot water until it begins to thicken, about 5 to 8 minutes, stirring constantly.
  4. Add vinegar and butter; continue cooking until thickened, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and beat with a rotary beater until smooth.
  6. Chill before serving.
