Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups raisins
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 3/4 cups plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Pour boiling water over raisins, then add butter, sugar, and egg to the water and raisins.
  2. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
  3. Add flour, baking soda, and salt to the mixture.
  4. Blend all ingredients thoroughly until smooth.
  5. Stir in chopped nuts and mix evenly.
  6. Grease and flour three No. 2 tin pans.
  7. Spoon batter into the pans, filling each about halfway.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 250°F (120°C) until dark brown, approximately 30 minutes.
  9. Insert a knife into the middle; if it comes out clean, the bread is done.
