Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups cracked wheat
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons margarine
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 2/3 cup warm water (105° to 110°F)
  • 5 to 6 cups flour
  • beaten egg (optional)

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the dry yeast in 2/3 cup warm water (105° to 110°F).
  2. Combine cracked wheat, raisins, brown sugar, salt, margarine, and 2 cups boiling water.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool to 110°F.
  4. Add the dissolved yeast to the mixture.
  5. Add 2 cups of flour and beat for 2 minutes.
  6. Stir in 2 1/2 to 3 cups of flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
