Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider using whipped cream cheese. If you don't have diced beef, shredded rotisserie chicken or crumbled sausage can work as a substitute. Adding a pinch of cayenne pepper can elevate the flavors. Remember to taste and adjust seasoning with pepper and garlic salt as desired before baking.

Serving Suggestions

This appetizer pairs wonderfully with a fresh salad or a platter of assorted vegetables for a balanced meal. For a delightful twist, serve it alongside a tangy dipping sauce or marinara. This dish can also complement a hearty soup, making it a great addition to a winter gathering or game day spread.

Storage & Reheating

Leftover filled sourdough bread can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place it in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 15-20 minutes or until warmed through. The sliced bread pieces can also be reheated in the oven for a few minutes to restore their crispness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this appetizer ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the cream cheese and beef mixture a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Hollow out the sourdough bread just before baking to ensure it stays fresh. Fill and bake it shortly before serving for the best flavor and texture.

What can I use instead of sourdough bread?

If sourdough isn't available, a round loaf of pumpernickel or a crusty French bread can be excellent alternatives. Just ensure the bread is sturdy enough to hold the filling, and adjust baking time if necessary to avoid overcooking.

How do I know when the bread is done baking?

The bread will be golden brown and the filling should be bubbly when it's done. You can also check the internal temperature of the filling; it should reach at least 165°F to ensure it's heated through properly.
