Ingredients

  • 1 cup finely chopped dates
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Mix sifted soda with chopped dates; pour boiling water over this mixture.
  2. Allow to stand until water cools.
  3. Cream sugar and shortening.
  4. Add well beaten egg, salt, and vanilla to the creamed mixture.
  5. Combine with the cooled date mixture.
  6. Stir in flour and chopped pecans, which have been dredged in flour.
