Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped dates

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix brown sugar and warm water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Pour the syrup into an 8 x 5 x 4-inch loaf pan.
  4. With a fork, blend butter and brown sugar; add milk, flour, and baking powder.
  5. Mix thoroughly until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  6. Add chopped dates and nuts to the dough and mix gently.
  7. Drop the mixture into the pan atop the brown sugar syrup without stirring or rolling.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
