Ingredients

  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. pitted dates
  • 1 c. nuts
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 3 Tbsp. hot water
  • 3 c. flour

Instructions

  1. Mix chopped dates and nuts with 2 tablespoons of flour to coat evenly.
  2. Cream shortening with brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add beaten eggs and vanilla, then mix well.
  4. Dissolve baking soda in hot water and add alternately with the remaining flour to the creamed mixture.
  5. Fold in the coated nuts and dates.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto a greased cookie sheet.
  7. Bake in a moderately hot oven (375°F) until cookies are light brown, about 13 minutes.
