- Saute the hamburger in a skillet until it is lightly browned and completely separated.
- Arrange a layer of sliced boiled potatoes over the bottom of a greased 1 1/2-quart casserole.
- Add a layer of cooked meat on top of the potatoes.
- Follow with a layer of sliced onions.
- Add a layer of sliced apples.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used.
- Heat the beef stock and add the grated nutmeg, pepper, and salt.
- Stir well so that all of the salt is dissolved.
- Pour the seasoned beef stock over the assembled casserole.
- Sprinkle bread crumbs over the top and add little dabs of butter if desired.
- Bake in a 350°F oven for 50 minutes.
