Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup margarine, butter or shortening
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups pumpkin, cooked and drained
  • 3 1/2 cups unbleached flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition.
  3. Mix in the cooked and drained pumpkin.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, and ground cloves.
  5. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the pumpkin mixture, blending thoroughly.
  6. Fold in the chopped nuts and chocolate chips.
  7. Grease and flour two loaf pans.
  8. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  9. Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the bread to cool in the pans for a few minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.
