- Beat margarine and egg until creamy.
- Add vanilla, orange or lemon peel, and chopped dates; mix well.
- Mix oats, flour, wheat germ or oat bran, baking powder, and spices separately.
- Add the dry mixture to the margarine and egg mixture.
- Alternate adding skim milk while beating on low speed until well blended.
- Spread batter evenly into a well-greased 10 x 15-inch cookie sheet or shallow rimmed pan.
- Sprinkle with finely chopped nuts and press gently into the batter.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 25 minutes or until the center is firm.
- Cool before cutting into 2 x 3-inch bars. Makes 25 bars.
