Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup margarine or butter
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 cups plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 1/2 cups dried apples

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.
  3. Stir in the molasses, then beat in the eggs one at a time.
  4. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger.
  5. Add the dry mixture to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, mixing well.
  6. Spoon half of the batter into three greased pans.
  7. Bake each for 15 to 20 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool the layers on a wire rack.
  9. Cook dried apples and add spices to taste, then spread between the layers.
  10. Assemble the layers and dust the top with powdered sugar.
