Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in the brown sugar and shortening until the mixture is crumbly.
  3. Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture for topping.
  4. Stir in the buttermilk and eggs just until all the flour is moistened.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 9-inch square pan.
  6. Sprinkle the reserved crumb mixture over the batter.
  7. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35 to 40 minutes.
