Ingredients

  • 1 cup hot water
  • 8 oz chopped dates
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Pour hot water over chopped dates and let sit.
  2. Add soda and butter; cool the mixture.
  3. Stir in sugar and slightly beaten egg.
  4. Sift together flour, salt, and baking powder.
  5. Gradually stir dry ingredients into the date mixture.
  6. Add chopped nuts and vanilla; mix well.
  7. Pour batter into a loaf pan.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour.
