Ingredients

  • 1 (5 to 6 oz.) pkg. medium noodles
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper
  • 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
  • 1/2 c. sour cream
  • 3 Tbsp. milk
  • 1/2 c. grated Cheddar cheese
  • 1 pkg. chopped spinach, cooked and drained

Instructions

  1. Cook the noodles according to package directions.
  2. In a bowl, stir together the cream cheese, sour cream, and milk.
  3. In a 2-quart casserole, layer half of the meat mixture, all of the cooked spinach, and half of the cream cheese mixture.
  4. Add the remaining meat and the rest of the cream cheese mixture.
  5. Top with grated Cheddar cheese.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 40 to 50 minutes.

Tips & Substitutions

For a creamier texture, consider adding a bit more milk to the cream cheese mixture. If you're short on time, pre-cooked noodles can speed up the process. You can also substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option, or use cottage cheese instead of cream cheese for a different flavor profile. For an extra kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes.

Serving Suggestions

This Easy Layer Bake pairs nicely with a simple side salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal. A dollop of salsa on top can add a fresh twist. Consider serving it alongside garlic bread or a warm crusty roll to soak up the delicious sauce. For a hearty meal, you might also enjoy it with a side of American recipes like coleslaw.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the casserole in the oven at 350°F for about 20-30 minutes, covered with foil to prevent drying out. Alternatively, you can microwave individual portions until heated through, stirring occasionally for even warming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the casserole up to a day in advance, cover it tightly, and store it in the refrigerator. Just be sure to add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking straight from the fridge, as it will need to heat through thoroughly.

Can I freeze the Easy Layer Bake?

Yes, this dish freezes well. After baking, let it cool completely, then wrap tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil before freezing. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and bake at 350°F until heated through, or bake from frozen, adding extra time.

What can I use instead of spinach?

If you're not a fan of spinach, you can easily swap it out for other cooked vegetables like kale, broccoli, or even sautéed mushrooms. Just make sure they are well-drained to avoid excess moisture in the casserole.
