Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cubes butter
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1 pound mixed fruit
  • 1 package seedless raisins
  • 2 ounces vanilla extract
  • 6 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 pound walnuts
  • 1 package candied cherries

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon flour over the mixed fruit and toss well to coat.
  2. Cream the butter and white sugar together until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Dissolve the soda in boiling water and let it cool slightly.
  4. Gradually add vanilla, beaten eggs, and flour to the creamed mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Pour the stiff batter over the floured fruit and mix thoroughly with your hands.
  6. Grease the pans and line the bottoms with brown paper.
  7. Divide the batter into the prepared pans.
  8. Bake at 250°F (121°C) for 2 1/2 hours or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
